What is Scratchboard?

Scratchboard is both a medium and an illustrative technique. The panels used for scratchboard art are wood panels coated with a thin layer of fine, white clay. The clay is then covered with black India Ink. Various etching tools are used to remove the upper black ink and expose the white clay underneath.

A high level of skill is required to produce the volume and patterns needed to achieve the range of values located within the image. Hundreds and hundreds of lines are scratched into the India Ink and clay to achieve the very graphic, detailed image.  In addition, the artwork may be enhanced with color watercolor, inks, or other paints. The scratchboards used are professional grade and are completely archival, museum quality and resistant to fading. The finished art pieces are sealed to eliminate fingerprints and can be framed without glass.
